Jimmy was born James William Marvin on July 26,1984 at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, Michigan.  Born at 5:53 a.m., Jimmy was named after his dad James and his uncle Bill. Jimmy was a healthy baby boy weighing in at 7'12" and 21" in length.  Jimmy was the youngest of four children, which includes two brothers, Shaun and Joey, and older sister Heather.  Jimmy's grandparents are Patrick and Mary Grimes of Clawson (deceased), grandmother Dorothy Marvin of Clawson [ deceased ], and Ken and Carol Marvin of Hale, Michigan.  Other members of Jimmy's family include his aunts and uncles, Bill and Kathy Marvin of Ferndale, Connie and Mark Schroeder of Clarkston, Dawn and Chris Denning of Valrico, Florida, Pete and Patricia Grimes of Royal Oak, and Cathy and Thad MacKillop of Clawson.

As a youngster Jimmy enjoyed playing soccer, baseball, basketball, bowling, fishing, and football.  Jimmy played on several baseball teams in the city of Clawson including playing for his dad on the Cubs and A's.  His soccer career was short.  He only played one season at the age of six.  Even though his career in soccer was short, he always had one special fan in the crowd who came to every game, his grandpa, Patrick Grimes of Clawson.  Patrick, who was from Ireland, also played as a boy in Ireland, and loved to watch his grandson play.

Jimmy also bowled in a youth league at Thunderbird Lanes on Saturday morning with his brothers and sister. He was usually on a team with his buddy Phillip Isabell. As a teenager Jimmy also worked as a porter for the bowling alley, and helped with the after school youth league.

Jimmy played several years for the Maverick Youth Football League.  He played  several positions on defense and even one year played Quarterback for the J.V. Maverick League.  Jimmy was never an outstanding athlete in any of his sports, but he always tried to do his best.  He enjoyed being with his friends and being part of a team.
